• Into the unknown

    The Fear of the Unknown

*Into the Uknown plays in the background* I think that we have had enough catchy Frozen songs to last a lifetime but what she says about going into the unknown is true. There are times when we have to face the unknown when we have to face our futures. Today, I met with my school advisor and she gave me the day I am going to graduate from college with my bachelor’s in communication. When anyone asks me what I feel about this, I always tell them, “a bit excited and a bit terrified.” Truth is that I have no clue about the type of future that I want. I…

  • A Case for Valentine’s Day

I’m excited for Valentine’s Day this year. You want to know why? It’s because this year, I’m no longer thinking about how single I am or complaining that I have to watch a romance move to celebrate. I’m excited because of what Valentine’s means to me. When researching why people hate Valentine’s day so much, I found three main reasons: it’s a commercial holiday, you don’t need a special day to pay attention to those you love, and sometimes there are people who are single. Those are all good reasons. There have been multiple times in my life when I have thought those same things. I do want to give…

  • The Person Next to Us

February is known as the love month. It is the time when we believe in romance. Where we take more time to think of our loved ones and give them our attention and our time. We think more about our connection to each other and the person next to us. I have a friend. She is someone that I have only known for a year and yet it feels like I have known her a lifetime. She has become not only a friend but a sister to me. Someone I can rely on and someone I hope that I serve. When I first met her, I thought that we would…

  • Forgiveness Takes Time

If there is one thing that I have learned after learning about forgiveness for a month is that it does not happen overnight. Forgiveness takes time. It is annoying but it is true. When I started this year, I fully planned on making no new year’s resolutions and just winging whatever comes. I eventually decided against that. Even with the resolutions I have made, it is still very difficult to let myself fail. And when I do, be empathetic with what I do feel. I recognize that what I want to do in my life won’t be easy. In fact, it is going to be hard. I know that I…

    Profiles in Forgiveness

Forgiveness is needed everywhere. Every day there is at least one person whose actions hurt another. Every one of us has felt hurt by another. With that in mind, it seems almost impossible to forgive every person who has wronged us. But when we forgive, we learn that we can overcome any challenge.  In order to help me learn what forgiveness is and how we can have it for ourselves, I asked Krista from the Scripture Study Project if I could interview her and know her thoughts. In our discussion Krista described forgiveness as “A lightness of heart, true peace and strength.” This definition reminded her of a scripture in…

  • How to Forgive Yourself in Six Easy Steps

New Year’s Resolutions can be hard to keep. People have the tendency to stop working on themselves as short as a month into the year. When it comes to breaking those resolutions, you need to forgive yourself and retry those goals for the year. Here are some easy steps to forgive yourself when you have broken those resolutions and what you can do to get back on the wagon. Acknowledge your mistakes Most professionals will tell you that admitting your mistakes and taking responsibility is the first step to any type of forgiveness. One way you may do this is by saying it out loud. By admitting them out loud,…

  • The History of New Year’s Resolutions

The New Year’s resolution has had an interesting history. From what scholars are saying, it dates back to the time of the ancient Babalyonians almost 4,000 years ago. Instead of January being the beginning of their year, it was actually during March when they planted their crops. They held a big celebration and made promises to their Gods. They promised to repay their debts and return borrowed goods. If they had kept their promises throughout the year, the Gods would favor them and if not, they would lose their favor and the Gods would have wrath upon them. During this time they would also sustain their king or crown a…

  • The Prince of Peace

“For unto us a child is born”, the Prince of Peace. Christ is the ultimate Prince of Peace. While we celebrate that every year during Christmas, it can seem difficult to understand how we can truly have peace in our lives. Most people will say that peace can only come when there isn’t war. Or when you focus on yourself. They will say that there is no way you will find peace in difficulty. I believe this is wrong. Peace can always come. Those who believe in Christ say that when you follow him, peace can come to you. While I believe the same thing, I also believe that if…

  • How to Find Peace

I remember driving through New England on a winter morning many years ago. As we traveled on a Vermont highway, we crested a mountain and descended into a beautiful wooded valley. A storm had passed that way the previous night. Snow had blanketed the entire area and the trees were encased in ice. As the sun lifted, the whole landscape glistened like a thousand polished diamonds. The entire episode only lasted a minute before the sun disappeared behind some clouds, but to this day I can see and feel that moment. It was stunning, breathtaking, mesmerizing, and an utterly defying description. To me, peace is equally description defying. Webster’s dictionary…

  • How a Car Crash Gave Me Peace

Last year, I was in a car crash. The car crash wasn’t my fault, instead, I was hit from behind after the car in front of me stopped short. The crash was sudden but I quickly moved to the side and got out of my car. It wasn’t until after I went to school and switched around cars with my mom that I realized that something was wrong with my head. I could speak right and I was really tired. I knew I needed to go to the hospital. They told me I had a concussion. I never had had a concussion before but it was during those next two…
